Let’s talk about Visa

Indonesia’s visa policies have undergone significant changes in recent years to balance tourism growth with national security and public order. Here’s an overview of the current visa regulations as of 2025:

Visa-Free Entry

Citizens from 13 countries, primarily members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), can enter Indonesia visa-free for up to 30 days. These countries include:

  • Brunei
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Timor-Leste

This visa exemption is strictly for tourism purposes and cannot be extended or converted to another type of visa.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

Travelers from 92 countries are eligible for a Visa on Arrival, allowing a 30-day stay that can be extended once for an additional 30 days. The process involves:

  • Fee: IDR 500,000 (approximately $35 USD)
  • Application: Available upon arrival at designated entry points or online through the official e-Visa website
  • Extension: Must be applied for before the initial 30-day period expires

Eligible countries include, but are not limited to:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • China
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Japan
  • Russia
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

For a comprehensive list, refer to the Directorate General of Immigration website.

Visa Required Prior to Arrival

Nationals from countries not eligible for visa-free entry or Visa on Arrival must obtain a visa before traveling to Indonesia. This involves applying at an Indonesian embassy or consulate in their home country. Additionally, citizens from certain countries require special authorization from the Indonesian immigration authorities, known as a “calling visa.”

Overstay Penalties

Indonesia has strict penalties for overstaying visas. Recent regulations have increased penalties, with violations potentially leading to imprisonment ranging from 20 years to life. This underscores the importance of adhering to visa conditions and ensuring timely extensions or departures.
